There were so many incredible moments during our trip to Bulgaria… eating plates of meat at the public pool on a humid 95 degree day, a constant supply of the most delicious and cheapest salad in the world (shopska), getting an unbiased history lesson in Communism from Borislav’s mom, seeing the oldest (and slowest) nun in the world at a hidden little monastery in the mountains, and the list goes on and on. But the number one highlight for me was visiting a crumbling concrete Communist meeting hall shaped like a U.F.O. perched atop one of the tallest mountains in the country. This place is called Buzludzha (booze-luge-ah). Scattered around the decaying building are chunks of concrete, pieces of metal roof, and lots of graffiti. I ended up venturing inside via a broken window and was rewarded with one of the most exhilarating photographic moments of my life. More to come in future posts… stay tuned, you don’t want to miss them.
